Andrographis paniculata belongs to Acanthaceae. It is an annual herb and harvested in autumn. It originates from India and now widely cultivated in Yunnan, Guangdong, Guangxi Hainan, Fujian, etc.

Treating & Preventing Colds

Taking Andrographis may help to reduce the severity of your symptoms from the common cold. Andrographis extract was indeed more effective than placebo in treating the symptoms associated with acute respiratory infections, including the common cold and flu. A particular Andrographis concoction taken at a dosage of 6 grams daily for one week was equally effective as acetaminophen in reducing fever and sore throat.

Supporting the Immune System

Andrographis may stimulate the immune response and support the immune system. Andrographis contains constituents called andrographolides, which are responsible for this immune system stimulation.

Treating Infections

Andrographis's immunity-boosting constituents may also help to fight certain infections. In addition to its antiviral effects, Andrographis may have antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-malarial and anti-inflammatory activities. Andrographolide, the important constituent of andrographis, boosted CD4 lymphocyte counts and reduced the viral load in people with HIV infections. Andrographis can help to support antibiotic medications to treat dysentery and may help to treat chronic viral hepatitis. Andrographis extract taken orally can also treat snake bites by neutralizing the venom.

Treating Gastrointestinal Ailments

The andrographolides contained in Andrographis may also help to treat certain gastrointestinal problems by stimulating the secretion of bile. Andrographis has been used in traditional herbal medicine throughout China and India to treat digestive problems, and you may find the herb helpful in easing indigestion. Andrographis may act to stimulate gallbladder contractions. This and other actions may help to protect the liver from harmful toxins.

 

4. Safety Concerns

Andrographis is LIKELY SAFE for most adults when used short-term. It might also be safe when up to three months.

It is POSSIBLY SAFE in children when used short-term, up to one month.

It can cause side effects such as loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, rash, headache, runny nose, and fatigue.

When used in high doses or long-term, Andrographis might cause swollen lymph glands, serious allergic reactions, elevations of liver enzymes, and other side effects.

 

5. Dosage Information

For treating the common cold: a combination of a specific Andrographis extract, standardized to contain 4-5.6 mg andrographolide, plus 400 mg Siberian ginseng (Kan Jang, Swedish Herbal Institute) three times daily.

For relieving fever and sore throat in tonsillitis: 3-6 grams daily.
